John Hanly served as Headmaster of The Pingry School in Martinsville from 1987 to 2000. Prior to his years at Pingry, Mr. Hanly spent more than 10 years at Trinity School in New York, holding a variety of positions, including Interim Headmaster, Assistant Headmaster, Principal of Upper School, and Head of Middle School. During this time, he also worked with Prep for Prep and Project Broadjump. Mr. Hanly began his career in St. Clare’s Hall in Oxford teaching English before becoming the Head of the English department at Audley House School in Bicester. He has been involved in a number or organizations over the years, sitting on the Board of Trustees of New Jersey SEEDS and St. Philip’s Academy, serving as the President and Secretary at the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools, and working with the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education, The Country Day School Headmasters’ Association of the United States, The Head Mistresses Association of the East, and the National Association of Independent Schools. Mr. Hanly received his B.A. and M.A. in English Language and Literature from Oxford University and an M.A. in Educational Administration from the Teachers College at Columbia University.
