Head of School | Newark Academy
Donald M. Austin was appointed Head of School for Newark Academy in 2007. In this role, Don has implemented the Academy’s Immersion Program, Capstone Experiences, June Term and the Newark Scholars Program; reorganized and invigorated the community service program; launched the STEM initiative; and led the Rise & Flourish Campaign. Prior to joining Newark Academy, Don served as Resident Director of the School Year Abroad in Rennes, France, an academic, cultural and linguistic immersion program for students from a consortium of high schools including 44 top independent school across the country. From 1985-2000, Don held a variety of teaching and administrative posts at the Collegiate School in New York.
Don served as President of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools from 2012-2014 and was elected a member of the national Country Day Schools Headmasters’ Association. He earned an undergraduate degree in English and French from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in French Language and Civilization from New York University, and a master’s of philosophy in French Studies, also from New York University.
