Teacher, Summer Challenge 2012

 

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:          Temporary, 3-Week Residential Program

TIME FRAME:                              June 23 – July 14, 2012

LOCATION:                                  The Hill School in Pottstown, PA

New Jersey SEEDSis a privately funded, statewide, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to academically talented, financially limited students. New Jersey SEEDS works with competitive, primarily independent, secondary schools to provide opportunities for highly motivated, academically qualified, and economically disadvantaged students.

The Summer Challenge Program(SCP)is open to approximately 120 New Jersey students each year. SCP is a residential program held at a boarding school campus which consists of daily classes in English, Math and History for three weeks during the summer following 7th grade. At the completion of the three weeks, selected students are invited to continue with the Scholars Program and participate in a twelve month program of classes, retreats, workshops and events.

POSITIONS

We are currently seeking teachers for the following subjects: 

  • Mathematics (Algebra)
  • English (Strong focus on vocabulary, grammar and writing)
  • History

Must have experience with middle school and/or high school students; Teaching certification is not required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach subject area according to curriculum guidelines specified by NJ SEEDS
  • Teach a minimum of 3-5 sections (may include an elective) of about 15 students per class Monday – Saturday
  • Hold office hours (minimum 5 hours per week)
  • Maintain ongoing curriculum evaluation and development to meet needs of students
  • Attend full staff breakfast Monday-Saturday

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Expert level mastery of subject area
  • Expert level written and oral skills
  • Teaching experience in a rigorous academic environment, including work with highly capable students
  • Demonstrated talent in the instruction of students with varied learning styles and levels of mastery
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have leadership experience in arts, sports or personal development including but not limited to: theatre, music, public speaking, debate, fine art, dance, swimming tennis, lacrosse, and/or yoga.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Review, correct and comment upon written assignments, exams and projects
  • Attend faculty meetings
  • Prepare detailed comments about each student via weekly progress reports to be used in the evaluation process for admission to the NJ SEEDS Scholars Academy Saturdays (SAS)
  • Additional duties as needed

SALARY:

  • $2,500
  • Room and board provided
