New Jersey SEEDS is a privately funded, statewide, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to academically talented, financially limited students. New Jersey SEEDS works with competitive, primarily independent, secondary schools to provide opportunities for highly motivated, academically qualified, and economically disadvantaged students.

The Summer Challenge Program (SCP)is open to approximately 120 New Jersey students each year. SCP is a residential program held at a boarding school campus which consists of daily classes in English, Math and History for three weeks during the summer following 7th grade. At the completion of the three weeks, selected students are invited to continue with the Scholars Program and participate in a twelve month program of classes, retreats, workshops and events.

The Boarding Experience (TBE) is for approximately 95 NJ SEEDS scholars and is the final phase of the 14 month Scholars Program. TBE is a residential program held at a boarding school campus. The program consists of daily classes in English, Math and History for three weeks during the summer after 8th grade. Scholars can also participate in a variety of elective classes, leadership development workshops and sports activities as they ultimately prepare for the transition to private school life.

POSITION OBJECTIVES

The Student Advisor (SA) assists the deans and teachers in administering the program. SAs will live in the dorms with the Scholars in order to provide supervision and assistance to Scholars throughout the day and night.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Attend a four day pre–summer training
  • Supervise dorms on a rotational basis
  • Supervise Scholars’ bus rides, lunch periods, free periods, and study halls
  • Help to conduct elective classes throughout the week
  • Tutor Scholars as needed
  • Assist Deans in managing and running special events activities
  • Assist Deans with administrative duties as needed
  • Attend full staff breakfast Monday-Saturday as schedule permits
  • Serve as a positive role-model and resource for the scholars

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Must be self-starter who is capable of problem solving and enjoys working with middle school aged children
  • Must be at least a rising sophomore and enrolled in college
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must act in a mature and professional manner at all times
  • Must be interested in the mission and the programs of NJ SEEDS
  • Must possess the willingness to learn, be flexible, and be able to relate to the experiences of a New Jersey SEEDS Scholar
  • Must have a strong background in language arts, math, history or science
  • Skills in areas of information technology, sports, music, art or dance is highly sought

SALARY:

  • $3,510
